Upcoming Park Projects:

These projects reflect over $56 million of improvements to Lee County park sites within the next five years.

Able Canal Greenway

  • Proposed Project Budget: $6,912,650
  • Date Board Approved: June 1, 2021
  • Project Summary: This project involves developing a 12'-wide shared-use pathway and related amenities along the northern side of the Able Canal in Lehigh Acres. Upon completion, this pathway will stretch for 6 miles and provide connections between Harns Marsh, Lehigh Acres Park/Barbara Farrell Park, Lehigh Elementary School and Lehigh Acres Trailhead Park. This is a joint project between the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the County. FDOT is contributing upwards of $4,912,650 towards the project.

Boca Grande Dog Park

  • Project Cost: $501,000

  • Project Summary: This project involves developing a dog park and accompanying vehicle-use areas at the Boca Grande Ballfield Site

Bonita Beach Park Improvements

  • Project Cost: $1,950,000
  • Date Board Approved: Budget will be requested for FY 22/23
  • Project Summary:  This project involves renovations to Bonita Beach Park including ADA upgrades to the restrooms and creation of a larger seating area overlooking the beach.

Caloosahatchee Creeks Preserve Fishing/Observation Platform

  • Project Cost: $222,371
  • Date Board Approved: September 21, 2021
  • Project Summary: This project involves the planning, design, and construction of a 100’ segment of elevated boardwalk and a fishing/observation platform at Caloosahatchee CreeksPreserve East 

Caloosahatchee Regional Park Shoreline Stabilization

  • Project Cost: $1,184,630
  • Date Board Approved: June 1, 2021
  • Project Summary: This project involves placing 5,500 cubic yards of riprap spanning 3,250 linear feet along the north shoreline of the Caloosahatchee River. The riprap will help stabilize the shoreline along the south boundary of Caloosahatchee Regional Park.

Crescent Beach Restroom Replacement

  • Project Cost: $160,000
  • Date Board Approved: September 21, 2021
  • Project Summary: This project involves replacing the existing temporary restrooms with new temporary restrooms at Crescent Beach Family Park on Fort Myers Beach. 

Larry Kiker Preserve Improvements

  • Project Cost: $6,500,000
  • Date Board Approved: October 19, 2021
  • Project Summary: This project involves developing recreational and educational amenities on portions of a ±3,924-acre property. In addition, Larry Kiker Preserve will be used for flood mitigation purposes. Restoration work will also occur on parts of the site. This is a joint project between Lee County Parks & Recreation and Lee County Natural Resources.

Lehigh Acres Park Expansion

  • Project Cost: $10,238,320
  • Date Board Approved: November 10, 2020
  • Project Summary: This project involves expanding Lehigh Acres Park. Upon completion, this ±42-acre area will contain three football/soccer fields, paved parking areas, a building containing concessions, locker rooms and restrooms, a playground, fishing pier, pickleball courts, pole barn, trails and shade structures.

Manatee Park Dredging and Paddlecraft Launch Improvements

  • Project Cost: $167,866
  • Date Board Approved: March 1, 2022
  • Project Summary: This project involves dredging a waterway as well as renovating two existing paddlecraft launches at Manatee Park.

North Fort Myers Park Shuffleboard Court Shade Enhancements

  • Project Cost: $650,000
  • Date Board Approved: September 21, 2021
  • Project Summary: This project involves adding shade structures to the shuffleboard courts at North Fort Myers Park. Additionally, improvements to the shuffleboard court will be made as a part of this project. 

Phillips Park Pickleball Courts

  • Project Summary: This project involves building pickleball courts and related amenities on a 0.34-acre parcel adjoining Phillips Park

Pine Island Commercial Marina Improvements

  • Project Cost: $1,250,000
  • Date Board Approved: November 10, 2020
  • Project Summary: This project involves the dredging of the canal on the south end of Pine Island Commercial Marina, seawall replacement, finger pier replacement, ADA upgrades and other improvements.

Player Development Complex Improvements

  • Project Cost: $3,074,000
  • Date Board Approved: September 21, 2021
  • Project Summary: This project involves the construction of paved parking (250-500 spots), shade structures (±65,000 square feet) and fencing on land adjacent to the existing Player Development Complex.  

Playground and Splashpad Shade Enhancements

  • Project Cost: $5,841,450
  • Date Board Approved: 
  • Project Summary: This capital project involves constructing shade structures over four playgrounds and two splashpads at five parks (Buckingham Park, Hunter Park, Lakes Park, Matlacha Park, and Veterans Park) within the County. Additional funding has been provided to add shade structures at all Departmental playgrounds as well as eight Departmental athletic facilities.   

Rutenberg Park Improvements

  • Project Cost: $2,035,000
  • Date Board Approved: September 15, 2020
  • Project Summary: This project involves developing pickleball courts as well as a small building containing restrooms and storage space on a ±4-acre section of Rutenberg Park. As part of this project, the old library/Lee County Parks & Recreation support services building will also be demolished.

Schandler Hall Skate Park

  • Project Cost: $275,000

  • Project Summary: This capital project involves developing a skate park at an existing multi-purpose field at Schandler Hall Park

Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve Improvements

  • Project Cost: $543,172
  • Date Board Approved: September 21, 2021
  • Project Summary: This project involves building a path from Six Mile Cypress Parkway to the Six Mile Cypress Slough Interpretive Center, restriping the parking lot, and making the restrooms by the trailhead ADA compliant.
