Ribbon-cutting ceremony set for the soft opening of Lee County's Punta Rassa Boat Ramp and conclusion of FDOT's Causeway project

Ramp reopens to public at noon Thursday, Aug. 21

Fort Myers, FL, Aug. 12, 2025 – The public is invited to join government officials for an official ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, for the soft reopening of Lee County Parks & Recreation's restored Punta Rassa Boat Ramp and for the conclusion of the Florida Department of Transportation's Sanibel Causeway Emergency Restoration project.

The ceremony at 15001 Punta Rassa Road, Fort Myers, will feature brief remarks by Lee County Commissioners, FDOT and other officials.

The boat ramp will open for public use at noon Thursday with limited amenities, including the ramp, partial docks, parking and restrooms. Work will continue at the site in the coming months.

Future improvements include completed dock access, a fish cleaning station, landscaping and additional lighting. Signs and buffers will be in place during this process. Boaters are asked to stay off docks that remain under construction and refrain from climbing on the riprap along the Causeway. Lee County Parks & Recreation will have staff and rangers on site.

This is the first time since Hurricane Ian that boaters have been able to access the Punta Rassa ramp. In partnership with FDOT, the Punta Rassa Boat Ramp served as a staging site for permanent Sanibel Causeway repairs and was pivotal in the restoration of this arterial road connecting barrier islands to the mainland. The soft reopening of this site marks the completion of a major step forward in long-term recovery.

Parking Fees: Payment is accepted in bills, as well as most major credit cards. Exact change only-no refunds. Lee County's Annual Parking Sticker is accepted at this location.

This facility features two double ramps (with a short wooden dock in between) and long wooden docks on either side. There is plenty of room for staging. It also has a fish cleaning station, restrooms, and several vehicle / trailer combination parking spaces along with several single vehicle parking spaces for those that want to join their boating friends.

A Saltwater Fishing License is required to saltwater fish from shore. There is no fee for Florida residents.

History

In May of 1975 the Frizzell & Kontinos families donated 1.5 acres to Lee County under the provision that it be developed in to a boat ramp and remain for public use.

Shortly after the donation was official, work began and the boat ramp was completed in about one year. The newly constructed ramp featured two dual ramps. This allows for the launching or retrieval of four vessels at a time, separated by a short wooden dock and short wooden docks on either side for the purpose of securing vessels while in the process of unloading and loading. Amenities include paved parking and restroom facilities. The construction funded by Boater Registration Fees.

In the mid-eighties, the restrooms were destroyed by fire set by vandals and shortly there after rebuilt. That is the structure that services it to this day. This structure was replaced with an upgraded, more user friendly building. This new building meets the current guidelines for the American Disabilities Act (ADA) and has two unisex style bathrooms incorporated into one structure.

2001 brought some needed upgrades to the facility. These were in the form of winged extensions on the two wooden end docks to relieve the congestion experienced on busy days due to a growing number of boat users. It was also dredged and had large concrete mats laid to extend the ramps, to allow the launching and retrieval of larger boats and trailers and to reduce the amount of prop wash caused by the boats as they load and unload.

2007 brought some additional changes due to the replacement of the Sanibel Bridge and re-configuration of the LeeWay toll facility. These consisted of additional parking spaces, a new restroom facility and a new fish cleaning station and approximately .5 acres of land.
