Spay Day USA:  Lee County's Spay Station Begins Its Second Year!

Fort Myers, Florida, February 18, 2008-One year ago this month Lee's County's mobile pet sterilization clinic, the Spay Station, was launched.  Appropriately, the first sterilizations performed on the mobile clinic were on Spay Day USA, a national campaign to promote the benefits of spaying and neutering pets.

Since Spay Day's inception in 1995 over one million pets have been sterilized during the annual campaign.  Nationwide, America's shelter workers are forced to humanely euthanize an estimated three to four million homeless cats and dogs each year as the number of homeless pets far exceeds the number of available homes.

In an effort to change these statistics locally and reduce pet overpopulation, Lee County Animal Services offers spay or neuter services for the pets of low-income owners not just one day a year on Spay Day but 52 weeks a year!  The Spay Station services include sterilization, rabies vaccination, county license, and microchip ID for only $20.  The service is free for owners on public assistance.

Initially the mobile clinic was only in operation once a month.  One year later it is on the road three days a week.  To celebrate the first year's success and plans for the future, the Lee County Board of County Commissioners will present a resolution declaring February 26, 2008, Spay Day USA, Lee County.  They will also recognize the important benefits of spaying and neutering.

Following the ceremony, the Spay Station staff will head to North Fort Myers Community Park where they are scheduled to do surgeries that day.  North Fort Myers Community Park, located behind the North Fort Myers Library at 2021 North Tamiami Trail, is a regular stop on the Spay Station's schedule.  Other locations are Veterans Park in Lehigh, The Stars Complex in Fort Myers, Four Freedoms Park in Cape Coral, and the Lake Regional Library in South Fort Myers.

In 2008 Animal Services will expand their locations and target specific neighborhoods where transportation is an issue in addition to the broader areas they currently serve.  On March 20 and 25 the Spay Station will be in the Pine Manor neighborhood in South Fort Myers.

Surgeries are by appointment only for Lee County residents who qualify.  For more information regarding the benefits of spaying and neutering or to schedule an appointment call (239) LEE-PETS (533-7387).  The Spay Station's schedule, plus lost pets and pets for adoption, may be viewed online at Animal Services website, www.LeeLostPets.com.    More Spay Day information is available at www.hsus.org.

Lee County Animal Services provides animal control services throughout Lee County and operates an animal shelter to house stray and abandoned domestic animals.  In addition to low-cost spay/neuter programs, it also provides educational initiatives, and rabies and bite case control programs.  The shelter is located off Six Mile Cypress Parkway next to the Lee County Sheriff's Dept.
