LEE TV TO AIR VIDEO ON AFRICAN BEES

Lee County, Florida (July 27, 2007) – Lee TV, Lee County's government access channel, will begin airing a video about Africanized Bees in Florida, an aggressive cousin of the more gentle European honeybees.  The video was produced by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to inform residents and visitors about the insects which are becoming more numerous throughout the state.

Entitled, "Africanized Bees in Florida:  Coping With the Challenge", the video is intended to help raise public awareness about the threats Africanized bees pose to people and animals.  The video also explains the important role played by managed honeybees, which are vital to Florida's food production, wildlife, and environment.

Africanized bees were discovered in Florida about 5 years ago and their nests and swarms have appeared across the state.  They build nests in almost any opening or cavity around the home and are easily agitated.  They will defend their nests most aggressively, even from loud noises such as lawnmowers and weed-eaters.  The video outlines the dangers, what to do if one encounters a swarm or next, and how to check for potential nesting areas.

The program will air on Lee TV, channel 11 on the Comcast cable system and in Cape Coral on channel 16, Wednesdays at 2:00 pm and Fridays at 8:30 pm for the next month.
