EMS 14th in Bill Shearer Advanced Life Support International Competition
Jul 19, 2007 Ft. Myers, Fla.-The team representing Lee County Emergency Medical Services placed 14th in this year's Bill Shearer Advanced Life Support International Competition in Orlando, Fla. July 18. The Lee County team's performance earned them 120 point from the judges. The first place team finished with 147 points. The top five teams advance to the finals on July 19. Team coach Lt. Tom Pillsy said, "the team did great considering this was their first time in the competition. We train them to expect the unexpected and they held up real well." Pillsy along with the Lee County EMS training department developed scenarios and prepared the team for more than three months prior to today's competion. During the scenario, the team was presented with a simulated emergency call with three patients involved in an assault. These patients exhibited everything from chest and neck wounds, broken bones and a drug overdose. Following the successful completion of the initial simulated call, the team was dispatched to a second call with a patient in cardiac arrest. Unlike real-life, participants are only required to explain certain procedures such as equipment required, indications, contradictions, complications, and the actual procedure technique. This was the third year for Lee County EMS to compete in the event. Paramedics Veronica Robertson, William Robertson, Adam Thompson, and Vince Macias represented Lee County in the event. Veronica Robertson, William Robertson, and Vince Macias are residents of Cape Coral. Adam Thompson resides in Fort Myers. |
