Jul 18, 2007 LEE COUNTY EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE TO COMPETE IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION Ft. Myers, Fla.-Lee County Emergency Medical Services announced that Paramedics Veronica Robertson, William Robertson, Adam Thompson, and Vince Macias will compete in this year's Bill Shearer Advanced Life Support (ALS) International Competition in Orlando, Fla. July 18. The team will compete against 59 other National and International ALS teams including teams from South Africa and Australia. The goal of the competition is to simulate a real life scenario as closely as possible. Procedures will be carried out in as realistic manner as possible. Procedures and medication administration will take place in real time. IV infusion rates will be monitored. Most procedures, including spinal immobilization/patient packaging, will actually be carried out; however, some procedures will require only explanations of such components as equipment required, indications, contradictions, complications, and the actual procedure technique. Participants are asked to be prepared to perform any procedure contained in a list provided pre-competition. Team coach Lt. Tom Pillsy along with the Lee County EMS training department have developed scenarios and prepared the team for more than three months. This will be the third year for Lee County EMS to compete in the event. In the previous competitions, Lee County finished in the top 20 percent. A panel of judges will score each teams ability to perform the procedures. The top five finishers advance to the finals held the following day. Veronica Robertson, William Robertson, and Vince Macias are residents of Cape Coral. Adam Thompson resides in Fort Myers. |
