Second Annual National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 21

Along with other public transportation systems across the country, Lee County Transit will participate in the Second Annual National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 21 by offering free rides system-wide throughout the day.

Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA),  the 2007 National Dump the Pump Day is a day that encourages people to ride public transportation to help improve the environment and to conserve gasoline.

For those unfamiliar with the transit system, maps and schedules are available on LeeTran's website at www.rideleetran.com, or riders can call Customer Service at 533-8726 (LEE-TRAN) from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, or Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Please consider leaving your car in the garage next Thursday and giving public transit a try!

PUBLIC TRANSIT FAST FACTS:

U.S. public transportation systems save 1.4 billion gallons of gasoline every year, the equivalent of 108 million cars filling up in a year.

Public transportation produces nearly 50 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx), per passenger mile, than private vehicles.

Every gallon of gas burned produces six pounds of pollution.

The World Energy Resources Program of the U.S. Geological Survey estimates that the remaining oil reserves will be exhausted within the next 50 years.
