Lee County April Building Permit Update
May 2, 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Mary Gibbs, Lee County Community Development Department LEE COUNTY APRIL BUILDING PERMIT UPDATE FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 2, 2007) – Builders in unincorporated Lee County, Bonita Springs and Fort Myers Beach pulled 264 permits valued at $71.1 million for single-family houses in April, about 17 percent fewer than in March and 69 percent less than in April 2006. This was the lowest April total since 2001, when 254 permits for single-family houses were issued. However, the pace of commercial permitting remained strong in April with 20 permits valued at $27.2 million. That is up by $3.3 million, or 13.9 percent, from March. And, it is more than triple the April 2006 value of commercial permits, which was $5.9 million. About 67 percent of the single-family home permits were for construction in Lehigh Acres. Also in April, permits were issued for 160 multi-family units with a combined value of $26.5 million. In the first four months of this year, Lee County issued a total of 11,745 building permits valued at approximately $858.9 million. At this time last year, the county had issued 16,322 building permits valued at approximately $1.6 billion. Lee County Community Development oversees planning, zoning, and development services, such as permitting, development and environmental review, building inspection and code enforcement in the unincorporated areas of the county, and permitting services for Bonita Springs and Fort Myers Beach.
