Lee County Prescription Drug Discount Program Widely Used In First Five Months County Residents Take Advantage Of Free Discount CardsTo Save Money On Prescription Drugs

April 2, 2007 - During the first five months since the introduction of the Lee County free prescription drug discount card, county residents filled 4,256 prescriptions with the cards at discounts averaging $8.89 (17.16%) per prescription, Kim Hustad, Program Manager for Human Services announced today.

Lee County launched the program to help consumers cope with the high price of prescription drugs. The county is making the free prescription drug discount cards available under a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo) that offers average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs.

"We know we have distributed a lot of these cards.  So, if you have one, please use it.  It really does work", stated Kim.

Best of all, there is no cost to county taxpayers for NACo and Lee County to make these money saving cards available to our residents.

The cards may be used by all county residents, regardless of age, income, or existing health coverage, and are accepted at over 80 local pharmacies. A national network of more than 57,000 participating retail pharmacies also honors the Lee County Prescription Discount Card.

Cards are available at twelve Lee County libraries, the Sanibel and Fort Myers Beach libraries, the United Way House and Lehigh Community Services in Lehigh Acres, the Bonita Springs Assistance Office, the Indian Creek RV & Mobile Home Park on San Carlos Boulevard and at Lee County Human Services at 2440 Thompson Street in Fort Myers.  Information is available on the Human Services web site at http://dhs.lee-county.com/AP_Family_T4_R160.html.  County residents can call toll free 1-877-321-2652 or visit https://naco.advancerx.com for assistance with the program.

"Using the NACo prescription discount card is easy," said Kim Hustad. "Simply present it at a participating pharmacy. There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no restrictions or limits on frequency of use. Cardholders and their family members may use the card any time their prescriptions are not covered by insurance."  The program is administered by Caremark Rx, Inc.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) is a full-service organization that provides legislative, research, technical and public affairs assistance to county governments.  Created in 1935, NACo continues to ensure that the nation's 3,066 counties are heard and understood in the White House and Congress.
