Horizon Council Workforce Task Force to host Career Day Event for approximately 2,000 Lee County Middle School Students

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 16, 2007)---The Horizon Council Workforce Task Force has been working with the School District to coordinate the "Career Day" event for approximately 2,000 8th graders from the West Zone of Lee County .  The Career Days will be held March 21-22, 2007 from 10 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Ida S. Baker High School at 3500 Agualinda Blvd. in Cape Coral, one of the County's new comprehensive high schools.

Approximately 1,000 students will be transported to Ida S. Baker High School in Cape Coral each day.  They will rotate into two groups, with one group assembled in the school's auditorium for a multi-media "Career Day" Presentation while the other group tours the schools career academies.  The "Career Idol" presentation will be a spin-off of the popular "American Idol" with local entertainers and career professionals presenting the world of work to students in an exciting venue.

The goal of the event is to inspire 8th graders to begin thinking about career choices and the educational levels necessary to obtain those careers.  The event will focus on five major areas of career opportunities: Medical and Healthcare, Building Construction and Design, Engineering and Manufacturing, Business/Finance/IT/Marketing and Public Service.

The Horizon Council of Lee County which is hosting the event, is a 62-member public-private organization that advises the Lee County Board of Commissioners on economic development issues.
