Thirteenth Air Show At Seahawk Air Park

Radio Control (RC) miniature airplane flying is not only alive and well in Cape Coral but flourishing at the Cape Coral's Seahawk Air Park, a section of the city's Festival Park. The facility is in N. W. Cape Coral off Wilmington Parkway.

The Cape Coral Seahawk Model Airplane Club supervises Air Safety and Flight Operations for Cape Coral Park's and Recreation Department at Seahawk Park. The Club is a Florida registered not-for-profit corporation, with a membership total of 312 people. The club is chartered by the Academy of Model Aeronautics, (AMA) which provides liability insurance for all club members.

For many, R/C flying activities help fulfill their dreams of being a pilot – one with his or her feet firmly planted on the ground while their aircraft zooms overhead – but a pilot nevertheless. Perhaps you'd like to build an airplane or fancy yourself as a fighter or aerobatic daredevil and long to be released from your earthly bonds. You can make those dreams come true at the Seahawk Air Park. If you ever wanted to fly and somehow never got around to doing so or had the money to take flying lessons, come out to the Seahawk Air Park and get involved. Flying miniature aircraft is just as rewarding as flying the full scale. Our club provides free flying instructions and aircraft construction guidance, along with pre flight aircraft checkout of your aircraft prior to its first flight.

Family participation is another aspect of flying radio-controlled aircraft. The satisfaction of working together to build and fly a plane is a rewarding experience. Our flyers range in age from eight to eighty, R/C flying has something for everyone.

We are a club of friendly people; we enjoy the camaraderie displayed by members at Seahawk Air Park. It's not difficult to become an "insider" in the R/Seahawks. Come out to the park and see for yourself!

If we've sparked you interest, the highpoint of our activities is the Air Show presented to the public each year. The show has attracted over 50,000 spectators in the past twelve years. The show will be held on Saturday March 17, 9AM to 4PM and on Sunday March 18, 9AM to 3PM. We will be featuring over one hundred large-scale aircraft, some with wingspans of up to fourteen feet. The type of aircraft will vary from the dawn of aviation Wright Brothers plane to present day modern jets.

This show brings the best IMAA pilots from all over the eastern Unites States to fly these impressive planes. The skills exhibited by these pilots are awesome. The aerobatics and military formations demonstrated make it hard to believe that they are radio/controlled airplanes. There will also be a candy drop each day for the children and a pass and review of all aircraft on the flight line with the pilots available to answer questions about their aircraft. On Sunday at 3PM a large-scale aerobatic airplane with radio and engine, ready-to-fly, will be raffled off.

The entire club participates in the management of the show, with support from the Boy Scouts of America.

The show is also a part of the "Celebrate Cape Coral" winter events program sponsored by the Cape Coral Chamber of Commerce and businesses of Cape Coral. Local TV stations and print media will also be promoting the show.

This is a show for spectators of all ages, come on out and enjoy the air show with friends and family. Admission to the show is free, a $5.00 donation per car will be requested to help offset expenses and support the club's $1500.00 donation to "The Mayors Scholarship Fund".
