Lee Residential Permitting Holds Steady

(March 5, 2007) – The pace of permitting for commercial buildings in unincorporated Lee County, Bonita Springs and Fort Myers Beach remained strong in February while permitting for single-family residences held steady. Commercial permitting in February was valued at nearly $23.9 million from 30 permits. That's nearly double the $12 million value of commercial permits in January. Big commercial projects include a $6.8 million Estero Chevrolet dealership and a $4.2 million Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market at 9131 College Parkway, south of Fort Myers. Builders pulled 299 permits for single-family houses in February, down by 6 permits from January. The value of permits for single-family homes was $73.3 million in February, compared to $88.3 million in January. About 81 percent of the single-family home permits were for construction in Lehigh Acres, valued at about $50.7 million. Also in February, permits were issued for 226 multi-family units with a combined value of $35.8 million. That includes duplexes, apartments and condominiums. In the first two months of this year, Lee County issued a total of 6,013 building permits valued at approximately $478.2 million. Lee County Community Development oversees planning, zoning, and development services, such as permitting, development and environmental review, building inspection and code enforcement in the unincorporated areas of the county and permitting services for Bonita Springs and Fort Myers Beach.
