Don Eslick is Named Citizen of the Year
Feb 20, 2007 For Immediate Release DON ESLICK IS NAMED CITIZEN OF THE YEAR (February 20, 2007 ) The Lee County Board of County Commissioners has selected Don Eslick from Estero as the winner of the Paulette Burton Citizen of the Year award for 2006. The Board made the announcement at its Tuesday, February 20, 2007 meeting. Eslick was honored for his tireless efforts in working with the Estero Council of Community Leaders, Smart Growth Committee and Estero Community Planning Panel. He becomes the 19th recipient of this annual award. Four runners up were also acknowledged at the Board meeting. They included: Roxie Smith ( Ft Myers Beach ), Dean Blietz ( Ft Myers ), Claire Mallon ( Sanibel ) and Joseph Spradlin ( Ft Myers ). The Burton Citizen of the Year Award was created in 1991 to honor Mrs. Burton, a long time Sanibel resident and government watchdog. She spent many years serving as a voice of the people to the Lee County Board of County Commissioners as well as playing an active role in Sanibel politics. She died in a 1991 car accident.
