GATES REMOVED AT MIDPOINT TOLL FACILITY

Fort Myers, Florida (January 18, 2007) – 2007 brings another exciting enhancement to the LeeWay Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) System.  The Lee County Department of Transportation (DOT) has instituted the use of a Violation Enforcement (VES) System.  The purpose is to collect revenue from the individuals that try to skip paying their share of the toll when they use the bridges.

And what is in it for the normal customer that is always ready to pay their share of the toll? It allows Lee County DOT to remove gates and eliminates the need for customers' who do not have funds to fill out paperwork in the toll lanes at the Midpoint Toll Facility.   This should minimize delays and improve traffic throughput for customers traveling on the Midpoint Memorial Bridge.

With the VE System, Lee County is able to still safeguard toll revenue even with the gates removed.  The system will take video pictures of vehicles that pass through the toll plaza without paying the toll.   These pictures will be processed by Lee County violation staff and notification letters will be mailed to the vehicle owners.

Implementation of VES and the removal of gates are scheduled for the Sanibel Toll Facility in spring 2007 with the opening of the new Sanibel toll plaza.  Implementation of VES for the Cape Coral Toll Facility has yet to be determined.
