Roadway Landscape - New Year to Bring New Look to Roadways
Jan 8, 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Paul Wingard, Lee County DOT Roadway Landscape - New Year to bring New Look to County's Roadways FORT MYERS, FL (January 8, 2007) - The County has been working since the late 1990's to install landscaping on various primary roadways around the County. 2007 will see the culmination of these efforts with the beginning of the landscape in the medians of US 41, with the first contract now under construction and the second to be presented to the BoCC for approval on January 9. Several years ago the Board of County Commissioners set aside funds to landscape US 41 from Collier County to Charlotte County. The first of the US 41 projects is about to start coming out of the ground with plants. The County bid the first landscape installation contract on US 41, Jamaica Bay to College Parkway, a couple of months ago and the Contractor is earnestly working to begin putting plants in the ground within the next couple of weeks. The second contract will cover US 41 from Corkscrew to the northern limits of the City of Bonita Springs. Additional contracts will be out to bid over the upcoming months with a plan to complete all of the landscaping on US 41 in 2007 and 2008. Due to the magnitude of each project, and the numerous other projects under construction, the planting will be going on continuously on US 41 over this time frame. While the timing, in regards to road congestion, may not be ideal, these projects have to be spread out because of the limits on local resources and in efforts of keeping the prices down. The County is continually monitoring traffic conditions and making adjustments where possible. In addition to all of the projects on US 41, other projects that are either under construction, or will be under construction some time in 2007, include Cypress Lake Drive (Summerlin to McGregor), Winkler Road (Cypress Lake to College), Alico (I75 to US 41), Gladiolus (Summerlin to US 41), Summerlin Road (Gladiolus to McGregor), McGregor Blvd (Summerlin to Sanibel), Bayshore Road (I75 to Slater), Hancock Bridge Parkway (Moody Creek to City limits), Treeline (Daniels to Alico), Bonita Beach (I-75 to Mango), Corkscrew (Ben Hill to Bella Terra), Three Oaks Pkwy (Alico Ditch to Alico Rd.) and Six Mile (Colonial to Daniels Pkwy.) . As in the past, the County will continue to provide notification to the news media via the Roadwatch, so drivers will be aware in advance of potential lane closures and congestion and will have the opportunity to avoid those areas. Many thanks go to the diligent efforts of the citizens working on the Roadway Landscape Advisory Committee. For questions or comments, contact DOT Operations at 694-3334.
