HOLIDAY SCHEDULE CHANGE – NO GARBAGE, YARD WASTE, AND RECYCLING COLLECTIONS ON CHRISTMAS DAY AND NEW YEARS HOLIDAY

FORT MYERS, Fla. ( December 20, 2006) – With both Christmas Day and New Years Day being on a Monday, all garbage, yard waste, and recycling collections are performed one day after the normally scheduled collection day.  The collection schedule change affects all residents in unincorporated areas of Lee County as well as the City of Bonita Springs, and the Town of Fort Myers Beach.

If your regular trash pick up is on Monday, then, during the holidays, it will be Tuesday.  If the regular collection day is Tuesday, it will be Wednesday; regular Wednesday collections are performed Thursday, and Thursday's collections will be Friday, any regularly scheduled collections for Friday will be performed Saturday.

This holiday schedule is en effect from December 25th, 2006 until January 6h, 2007.  The regular collection schedule resumes Monday, January 8th, 2007.

Recycling:  During the holiday season we tend to generate a much more garbage than usual. A substantial portion, between 20% and 25%,  of it is recyclable. Aluminum pie tins, plastic and glass bottles, aluminum beverage cans, mayo and relish jars, plastic whipped topping tubs, all cardboard including gift and shoe boxes, wrapping paper (except foil wrapping), tissue paper, as well as sales fliers and catalogs, can be recycled. Cardboard boxes need to be flattened (very large boxes need to be broken down to 4 ft x 6 ft).  Should customers find that they have more recyclable material than usual and the blue bin is already at capacity, a paper grocery bag may be used to accommodate the excess material.  Cardboard can be neatly placed next to the recycling container.  Please do not use plastic bags for containers of recyclable material!

The Solid Waste Division thanks the residents for participating in the Lee County Recycling Program and for ultimately preserving precious natural resources.

Christmas tree disposal:  Christmas trees from residential customers may be placed at the curb for collection with the regular yard waste.  Residents of multi-family complexes are urged to contact their Management Company or their Association for a Christmas tree pick-up schedule.  Please ensure that lights and other trimmings are removed so that the trees can safely be processed into mulch.

Keep in mind that the next Household Chemical Waste Collection is scheduled for January 27thd, 2006 in Cape Coral at the Public Works Annex off Everest Parkway.  Residents may also dispose of outdated and/or non-working electronic devices (computers, monitors, printers, fax, phone, stereo and video equipment) at this collection.

For a complete list of recyclable items and material accepted at our household chemical waste and electronics recycling collections visit our website at www.leegov.com/solidwaste.

We wish all Lee County residents safe holiday season and look forward to serving you in 2006.
