Lee's Monthly Permitting Slows

(Dec. 4, 2006) – Builders in unincorporated Lee County, Bonita Springs and Fort Myers Beach pulled 357 permits for single-family houses in November, about 20 percent less than in October and 49 percent less than in November 2005. The value of permits for single-family homes was $91.7 million in November. That's down from $121.3 million in October and $151.8 million in November 2005. About 77 percent of the single-family home permits were for construction in Lehigh Acres, valued at about $63.4 million. Also in November, permits were issued for 102 duplex and apartment units with a combined value of $13.4 million. Commercial permitting in November was valued at $52 million from 41 permits. That's up from October's 19 commercial permits valued at $18.6 million. So far this year, Lee County issued 43,719 building permits valued at approximately $3.8 billion. A record increase in 2005 hit the $4.7 billion mark for the year. Lee County Community Development oversees planning, zoning, and development services, such as permitting, development review, code enforcement and building inspections in the unincorporated areas of the county and permitting services for Bonita Springs and Fort Myers Beach.
