Lee TV to Air Video on Xeriscaping
Nov 16, 2006 For Immediate Release Fort Myers, Fl. (November 16, 2006) – Lee TV, Lee County's government access channel, will begin airing a video on how homeowners can landscape their yards using a technique known as Xersiscape. This type of landscaping uses native plants and trees that require less watering and maintenance. The program, "Plant It Smart With Xeriscape", was produced by the South Florida Water Management District. It will air on Mondays at 8:30 pm on Lee TV, channel 11 on the Comcast cable system and in Cape Coral on channel 16 on the former Time Warner cable system. The video follows the process of re-landscaping a typical South Florida home using Xeriscape methods. Hundreds of varieties of drought tolerant trees and shrubs can be used. By reducing the amount of lawn area that needs to be watered and the use of the right plants, homeowners can lower their water usage by as much as 75%. Water is one of the state's most limited resources and much of Southwest Florida is on year-round watering restrictions. By using conservation techniques such as Xeriscaping, and other local programs like the Mobile Irrigation Lab and Lee County's new RO water treatment plant, water managers are working to ensure that residents will always have access to clean, potable water.
