GROUNDBREAKING NOV. 14 FOR $53-MILLION JAIL EXPANSION

FORT MYERS, Fla. (November 8, 2006) – The Board of Lee County Commissioners and Lee County Sheriff's Office will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday, Nov. 14 for the expansion of the county jail complex on Ortiz Avenue.

The ceremony will be at 2 p.m. at 2501 Ortiz Avenue.  Commission Chairwoman Tammy Hall will serve as master of ceremonies.  She will be joined by representatives of the Sheriff's Office, local Criminal Justice System, and City of Fort Myers.

The expansion is an eight-story, 768-bed expansion to the existing Core Facility.  It will replace the existing Stockade, which has outlived its useful life, as well as provide new beds for the growing jail population.

The county issued bonds in October to pay for the expansion and a new, $11-million Sheriff's Evidence Facility.
