Lee County Division of Natural Resources Seeking Public Input on North Fort Myers Surface Water Management Plan

Town Hall Meeting 6 – 8 p.m., on Wednesday November 8, 2006 at the Lee County Civic Center Expo Hall

Fort Myers, FL, November 2, 2006 - The Lee County Division of Natural Resources will conduct a town hall meeting for the North Fort Myers Surface Water Management Plan project from 6 – 8 p.m., on Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at the Lee County Civic Center Expo Hall, 11831 Bayshore Road, North Fort Myers. This meeting is being held to gather information on drainage related problems in the project focus area, which includes North Fort Myers from US 41 east to SR 31; and from the Lee/Charlotte County boundary, south to the Caloosahatchee River.

The town hall meeting will be conducted in two parts.  From 6 - 7 p.m., maps of North Fort Myers will be displayed and those affected in North Fort Myers will be able to designate the drainage problem areas on these maps.  The public is also asked to submit questions to the project team during this first hour of the meeting.  At 7 p.m. the project team will present an overview of the project and their goals for the study.  Based on the questions submitted, a formal question and answer session will follow the presentation.

The goal of this project is to develop a Surface Water Management Plan for the North Fort Myers focus area.  This is an area of approximately 60 square miles with significant commercial and residential development.  In order to identify problem areas and aid in data collection, the public is being asked to provide input on the flooding in their area.  After the public meeting, the study team will work to identify a series of improvement projects for the County to implement.

The study will result in an overall assessment of the North Fort Myers region with regard to surface water management. This study will include data development, a structure inventory, surface water modeling, identification of improvement projects, water quality modeling and the development of alternatives.  The project is expected to last 15 months and is scheduled for completion in October 2007.  A second town hall meeting is planned to present the study findings, proposed improvements and answer any additional questions.

Anyone needing special accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 should contact Kris Cella at kcella@cella.cc or phone (239) 337-1071 prior to the town hall meeting.  If you have any questions about the project or would like information prior to the workshop, contact Ms. Cella.
