Lee's Monthly Permitting Drops

(Nov. 2, 2006) – Builders in unincorporated Lee County, Bonita Springs and Fort Myers Beach pulled 444 permits for single-family houses in October, about 3 percent less than in September. Compared to October 2005, a record-setting month, single-family residential permits are down by 417 or 48 percent. The value of permits for single-family homes was $121.3 million in October. That's down from $134.4 million in September and $187.7 million in October 2005. About 73 percent of the single-family home permits were for construction in Lehigh Acres, valued at about $73.9 million. Also in October, permits were issued for 124 multi-family duplex and apartment units with a combined value of $17.2 million. Commercial permitting in October was valued at $18.6 million from 19 permits. That's on par with September's 19 commercial permits valued at $17.1 million. So far this year, Lee County issued 41,023 building permits for a total value of $3.5 billion. The record increase in 2005 hit the $4.7 billion mark for the year. Lee County Community Development oversees planning, zoning, and development services, such as permitting, development review, code enforcement and building inspections in the unincorporated areas of the county and permitting services for Bonita Springs and Fort Myers Beach.
