Summerlin/Gladiolus Intersections to Close Nights Oct. 8-12
Oct 6, 2006 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Randy Cerchie, Lee County DOT, 479-8573 SUMMERLIN/GLADIOLUS INTERSECTIONS TO CLOSE NIGHTS FROM OCTOBER 8 THROUGH OCTOBER 12 FORT MYERS, Fla. (October 6, 2006) – Thru traffic in ALL DIRECTIONS at the intersection of Summerlin Road and Gladiolus Drive will be closed each night from Sunday, October 8 through Thursday, October 12 to allow for continued placement and fastening of the steel beams. Each beam is cross-braced to the beam next to it, and the time needed to complete the cross-bracing is much greater when performing this work after the beams are set in place. Ideally, two beams could be cross-braced together on the ground and lifted into place as a pair, but that method resulted in the pair being too rigid to be able to connect to the adjoining beams. Similar future closures of this intersection will be required when the beams are placed on the other bridge, when the concrete decks are poured, painting the bridges, and paving the intersection. The intersection will be closed each night beginning Sunday, October 8 until Thursday, October 12 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. MOTORISTS SHOULD AVOID THIS INTERSECTION AND USE ALTERNATE ROUTES: U.S. 41, Cypress Lake Drive, and Winkler Road. Access to businesses at the intersection will be provided. Law enforcement will be available to assist with maintenance of traffic.
