LEE COUNTY UTILITIES CHANGE OF DISINFECTION

FORT MYERS, Fla. (September 7, 2006) – Lee County Utilities (LCU) will be closing the interconnect between LCU and the City of Ft. Myers on September 11, 2006 at 9:00 AM.  The City of Ft. Myers uses free chlorine to disinfect their water, which is different from LCU, which uses chloramines.

The area that will be affected by this disinfection change are the following:

-          All of Lee County Utilities' customers from Veronica Shoemaker Blvd. east up to and including the FP&L Power Plant on State Road 80 (Palm Beach Blvd.), north to the Caloosahatchee River and south to Martin Luther King Jr, Blvd.

Customers may notice a change in taste, odor, and color of the water.  The change is temporary and harmless.

Customers that need to take special precautions and that should be aware of the type of disinfection in their water are as follows:

- Anyone using a kidney dialysis machine at home should contact the equipment supplier so proper filtering equipment may be installed.

 - Owners of tropical fish or other aquatic animals should contact a tropical fish store for ways to pre-treat water used to replenish the tanks.

Even though the conversion of disinfection will begin at 9:00 AM on September 11th, it will take approximately one week for the service area affected to be converted from a free chlorine residual to a combined chloramines residual.

For questions or concerns, please call 479-8181 during regular business hours.
