COMMISSIONER BOB JANES NAMED TO TWO STATEWIDE COMMITTEES

FORT MYERS, Fla. (August 4, 2006) – Lee County Commissioner Bob Janes has been appointed to serve on the Florida Substance Abuse and Mental Health Corporation, a non-profit corporation created by the Florida Legislature to oversee the state's publicly funded substance abuse and mental health services.

The corporation is charged with making recommendations annually to the Governor and the Florida Legislature on policies designed to improve coordination and effectiveness of the state's publicly funded mental health and substance abuse systems.

Lee County Commissioner Bob Janes has also been appointed to serve on the Florida Association of Counties' (FAC) Board of Directors as one of six county commissioners at-large.  The Florida Association of Counties, Inc. represents Florida's 67 counties and 377 county commissioners.

Commissioner Janes was appointed by Susan Latvala, FAC President and a Pinellas County Commissioner.  FAC's mission is to preserve and promote democratic principles by working to keep appropriate authority at the level of government closest to the people, and to increase the capacity of Florida counties to effectively serve and represent the citizens of the state through legislative action, education of public officials, and enhancement of public awareness about the role and functions of county government.

Janes is also serving in his second term as chairman of the National Association of Counties' Health Steering Committee, the Homeland Security Task Force and NACo Membership Committee.

Commissioner Janes was elected to the Board of Lee County Commissioners in 2000 and 2004.  He served as chairman in 2002 and is currently serving as vice chairman.  He represents District 1, which includes Sanibel, Captiva, Pine Island, Boca Grande and portions of Cape Coral.
