Lee's Residential Permits Drop in June

(July 3, 2006) – Lee County's Department of Community Development issued 757 building permits for single-family houses in June. The number of permits is down 149 or 16.4 percent from last month's total of 906. It's also down 268 permits or 26 percent in comparison to June 2005, which had the county's third-highest record number of permits at 1,025. The combined value of the June single-family residential construction is $215.4 million, compared to $226.6 for June of last year. About 59 percent of the permits were for construction in Lehigh Acres. The total number of all building permits issued in June 2006 was 4,399 for a combined value of $936.3 million. Compared to June of 2005, the number of permits is up 12 percent from 3,924. The value of the total permits more than doubled from last year's June value of $372.9. million. That's attributable mostly to 12 permits for large multi-family complexes with a total of 140 new units. Total permits for multi-family construction were issued for 326 units in duplexes and apartment buildings. For the year to date, Lee County has issued 27,340 building permits for a total value of $2.992 billion. Last year at this time, the year-to-date value was $2.3 billion. Permitting in Lee County experienced a record increase in 2005, surging $1.7 billion to hit the $4.7 billion mark. In 2004, permit value was $3 billion; in 2003 it was $2 billion; in 2002 it was $1.5 billion. Lee County's Community Development Department released its June statistics today. The totals include unincorporated Lee County, City of Bonita Springs and the Town of Fort Myers. Both Bonita Springs and Fort Myers Beach contract with the county for permitting services.
