Apr 18, 2006 For Immediate Release Contact: Jennifer Dunn, Lee County Economic Development Office Horizon Council Workforce Task Force to host Career Day Event for 2,000 Lee County Middle School Students FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 18, 2006)---The Horizon Council Workforce Task Force has been working with the School District to coordinate the first "Career Day" event for approximately 2,000 8th graders from the West Zone of Lee County . The first Career Days will be held April 25-26, 2006 from 10 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Ida Baker High School, one of the County's new comprehensive high schools. Approximately 1,000 students will be transported to Ida Baker High School in Cape Coral each day. They will rotate into two groups, with one group assembled in the school's auditorium for a multi-media "Career Day" Presentation while the other group tours the schools career academies. The "Career Idol" presentation will be a spin-off of the popular "American Idol" with local entertainers and career professionals presenting the world of work to students in an exciting venue. The goal of the event is to inspire 8th graders to begin thinking about career choices and the educational levels necessary to obtain those careers. The event will focus on five major areas of career opportunities: Health Care, Construction and Building, Public Service, Computer/IT/Finance and Manufacturing. Over 60 business leaders will be on hand to participate in the event. The Horizon Council of Lee County which is hosting the event, is a 62-member public-private organization that advises the Lee County Board of Commissioners on economic development issues. |
