Lee County Homeless Coalition Assesses Needs in Lee County

The Lee County Homeless Coalition consists of service providers, advocates, private businesses, homeless persons, formerly homeless persons, and other residents of the community. While taking their mission "to aid those who provide services to our homeless residents" seriously, The Coalition must first understand the needs of the community itself.

In order to better understand the needs of individuals and families in Lee that are currently without a place to call "home", the Coalition spent the last week of January 2006 conducting a survey. The team collected data from a sample of our population who self-declared as being "homeless" on the night of January 25th, 2006. The Lee County Department of Human Services is currently enhancing its Homeless Management Information System ( HMIS ) to better support Lee's Homeless Coalition.

Survey data suggests that of the estimated 514,295 people living in Lee County, 2078 are "homeless". Below is a more detailed breakdown of those 2078.

Males 1454
Females 624
Adults 1899
** Children 179
Hispanic 262
Black 436
White 1546
Other Race 96

** The number of children does not include the number of homeless children in the custody/care of The Department of Children and Family Services.
