LEE COUNTY VETERANS SERVICES MOVES OFFICES TO COUNTY-OWNED SPACE

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 6, 2006) – Lee County Veterans Services has moved its offices to a downtown Fort Myers location in a building the county purchased last year for $560,000.

The new location is at 2072 Victoria Avenue, just east of U.S. 41 at the corner of Grand Avenue (across from St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church).

The location is more centrally located with easier access to U.S. 41 than the prior offices on Evans Avenue.

The building – a former law office – is about 4,000 square feet.  Veterans Services is in about 2,000 square feet and the Lee County Sheriff's Office's Civil Processing Division is in about 1,300 square feet, with about 700 square feet of common areas.  There are 20 parking spaces – five in front and 15 in back.

Lee County Veterans Services assists veterans with their eligibility and entitlement to benefits based on their military service, including filing and defending claims for benefits.  It also supports veterans groups and events in the community, and coordinates a transportation service to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Bay Pines, Florida.

The Office also helps coordinate the annual Memorial Day ceremonies at the Old County Courthouse and the Veterans Day ceremonies in Cape Coral and Fort Myers.

The office has four employees and a $372,000 annual operating budget.
