NOMINATIONS BEING ACCEPTED FOR LOCAL HISPANIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS FORT MYERS, Fla. (February 24, 2006) – The Lee County Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board is accepting nominations through April 15, 2006 for the 2006 Hispanic Achievement Awards. In announcing the request for nominations, David Vargas, Chairman of the Lee County Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board, said "These awards are designed to recognize those in the Hispanic community who have made a significant contribution to improving life in Lee County and bridging the differences between cultures." Mr. Vargas stated that awards will be presented in seven categories: Outstanding Student of the Year (Elementary/Middle School), Outstanding Student of the Year (High School/College), Educator of the Year, Outstanding Ministry, Volunteer of the Year/Community Service Award, Employee of the Year and Business Organization of the Year. Vargas further explained that the Lee County Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board seeks to recognize those persons who project a positive image on a daily basis, while overcoming cultural, language, economic, health or other barriers. "As effective communication is more than speaking the same language, the awards also honor those persons who open lines of communication and bridge the differences between cultures." Vargas said.
The awards will be presented at a banquet, to be held in conjunction with Cinco de Mayo, on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater, 1380 Colonial Boulevard, Fort Myers, Florida. 33907. Tickets are $17 in advance, $20 at the door.
