Feb 17, 2006 FOR RELEASE FEBRUARY 17, 2006 One Book, One Community Activities Continue Fort Myers, FL (February 17, 2006) Lee County Library System's second annual One Book, One Community: Lee County Reads project has reached a halfway point and more exciting free activities are on the agenda. This countywide reading and discussion program encourages all residents to read the same book at the same time to create a countywide book club. Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" is the title for this year's project. The nearly 300 copies of the book available from Lee County Library System locations have been circulating well since the project kicked off in mid-January. "We have book discussions and special events scheduled through March 18," states Karen Sloan, Library Development Specialist and coordinator of the project. "This project truly offers something for everybody." Upcoming special events of the One Book, One Community project include: "To Kill a Mockingbird" Inside & Out 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 27 Lakes Regional Library Go beyond the pages of the book to discuss with author Claudia Durst Johnson the many issues raised by this enduring novel, including censorship, literacy, racial justice and matters of gender. Looking at the Scottsboro Trials and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, consider with Johnson how the times in which the novel was set and the times in which it was published enlarge our understanding of this work of literature. Mock Trial 5:30 p.m. Monday, February 27 Old Lee County Courthouse 2120 Main Street, Fort Myers See a mock trial that parallels the Tom Robinson case. The names have been changed but the issue of prejudice still has to be overcome. What will the verdict be? Watch as the State Attorney's Office of the 20th Judicial Circuit presents the case. Reservations are not required. Seating is on a first come, first served basis. "To Kill a Mockingbird" Inside & Out 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 28 South County Regional Library Join author Claudia Durst Johnson in a lecture and discussion of this enormously popular novel. Johnson will be looking at "To Kill a Mockingbird's" controversial reception throughout its history and its use of Gothicism to illustrate the point that we are all attracted to people different from ourselves.
