Board Approves Construction Contracts/Iguana Control Public Hearing

BOARD APPROVES CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS/IGUANA CONTROL PUBLIC HEARING 

FORT MYERS, Fla. (January 24, 2006) At its regular weekly meeting today, the Board of Lee County Commissioners took the following actions: 

Iguanas Agreed to hold a public hearing to expand the streetlighting district in Boca Grande to a "streetlighting and invasive exotic animal species control and removal" MSTU taxing district to pay for the control and removal of iguanas.  The public hearing date has not been set but will likely be in March. 

Renaming Approved renaming the Lee County Transportation Center (intermodal facility) in downtown Fort Myers after Civil Rights Pioneer Rosa Parks.  A ceremony for the Rosa Parks Transportation Center will be Feb. 4 at 10:30 a.m.

Water Received several status updates of water quality in Lake Okeechobee and the Caloosahatchee, Lake O drawdown schedules, a requested deviation by the Corps of Engineers, and upcoming meetings.

Courts Approved a contract with Centex Construction to build the Justice Center Annex for $44.9 million.  Includes a ten-story addition of approximately 16,000 square feet per floor.  The new addition will house new courtrooms on floors 1 through 8 and judges levels on floors 9 and 10.  Floors 1, 2 3, 5, 6 and 10 will be finished out in the initial construction.  Floors 4, 7, 8 and 9 will be shelled for finish at a future date.  To the north of the courtroom tower will be a new three-story judges parking structure.

Park Approved a $3.97 million contract with Lodge Construction for Phase III of Veterans Park to include site development, basketball, tennis and multipurpose courts, skate park, pavilions, metal building, access bridge and any and all miscellaneous incidentals. 

Bus Service Approved an Interlocal Agreement in the amount of $170,938 with the City of Bonita Springs for bus service in Bonita Springs.  This service was budgeted during the FY06 budget process and the City will share 50% of the cost of the service located within the City of Bonita Springs ($341,875).  This provides bus service from San Carlos Park to Bonita Springs.
