Board Approves Toll Plaza Cost/New "Swampmeister"
Sep 27, 2005 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FORT MYERS, Fla. (September 27, 2005) - The Board of Lee County Commissioners today approved the following items during its regular weekly meeting. They are: Sanibel Toll Plaza - Approved a contract with Jacobs Construction to replace the Sanibel Toll Plaza for a guaranteed maximum price of $20.96 million. Impact Fees - Set public hearings for Oct. 11 and 25 at 5:05 p.m. to consider increasing school impact fees, based on a recent update study, from $2,232 to $4,345 on a new single-family homes. Spyder - Approved the purchase of a Kaiser Model-S2 Gator 4X4 "Swampmeister," a $245,000 piece of equipment that the county Department of Transportation uses to clean canals and ditches. The Swampmeister, or Spyder, is one of two the county has to maintain drainage canals that are difficult to clean by conventional means. It has four, independently operated legs that allows it to straddle ditches, get in the ditches, or even climb fences. It also has a large claw that can clean muck and debris from ditches (see the picture from the Kaiser web page below). http://www.kaiser.li/content.php?SiteId=55&lang=de#gator Shelter - Authorized the Chairman to execute amendment to a lease agreement with the YMCA of Collier County and the City of Bonita Springs to use the YMCA facility in Bonita Springs as a hurricane shelter and staging area for emergency response equipment during emergencies. On April 8, 2003, Lee County entered into a lease agreement with the City of Bonita Springs and the owner of the YMCA facility under construction in Bonita Springs for an emergency shelter usage. In consideration, the City and County agreed to reimburse the owner for additional design and improvement costs necessitated to enhance the facility to withstand hurricane forces. During the course of construction, the scope of the facility was downsized from 29,720 square feet to 23,300 square feet, resulting in the lease agreement being reduced from $306,947 to $288,047. The County's responsible share of costs is $108,018 (37.4% of the total costs). |
