Gas Prices Fuel Increase in LeeTran Ridership
Sep 9, 2005 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Joann Haley, LeeTran, GAS PRICES FUEL INCREASE IN LEETRAN RIDERSHIP FORT MYERS, Fla. (September 9, 2005) - Lee County Transit - popularly known as LeeTran - saw a dramatic increase in ridership in August, attributed primarily to rapidly rising gasoline prices. In August 2005, the transit system handled nearly 214,000 passenger trips. After adjusting for the impact of Hurricane Charley in August 2004, this represents an increase of nearly 23% year-over-year. The months of June and July saw more typical increases of 2% to 3% from the previous year, further reinforcing the belief that fuel pricing and availability are key factors. "The impact of Hurricane Katrina on fuel supplies in the Southeast will continue to drive demand for public transportation," says Steve Myers, Transit Director. "Many budget-conscious and lower-wage workers are finding this the most cost-effective way to commute to work and other county destinations."
