LEE TV TO AIR VIDEO ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING

FORT MYERS, FL. (September 9, 2005) -  Lee TV, Lee County's government access channel, will air a video on the nationwide problem of human trafficking.  The short video, "Look Beneath The Surface", was released by the U.S Department of Human Services and produced to inform the public, media, medical providers, and law enforcement about human trafficking and provides guidance on how to identify and assist victims.

Human trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery.  Victims are subjected to force, fraud, or coercion, for the purpose of sexual exploitation or forced labor.  Victims are usually young children, teenagers, and women.  About 19,000 victims are trafficked annually into the United States from around the world.

Recently, there was a local case of human trafficking in Lee County.  The Lee County Board of County Commissioners and the Lee County Sheriff's Office have joined the fight to raise awareness about this issue and help victims.  The Sheriff's Office has set up a Human Trafficking Unit and will speak to groups on the subject.  Call 477-1400 to book a speaker.  Lee County Commissioners issued a proclamation in support of the awareness campaign and is providing posters with a toll-free number throughout the county.

The program will be broadcast each Wednesday during September on Lee TV, at 9:00 pm, on the ComCast cable system, Channel 11 and Time Warner, Channel 16.   Lee TV is Lee County's 24-hour government access channel that provides residents with information on what is going in Lee County Government.  A broadcast schedule can be viewed on the county's website at www.lee-county.com.  Click on Lee TV and select Lee TV Schedule.
