BOARD MOVES FORWARD WITH CONSERVATION 20/20 MITIGATION/PHASE II OF TEN MILE LINEAR PARK

FORT MYERS, Fla. (August 16, 2005) - The Board of Lee County Commissioners today approved the following items during its regular weekly meeting.  They are:

Mitigation Plan - Approved moving forward, for the first time, with a plan to mitigate wetland impacts for the county's construction of Three Oaks Parkway South on a Conservation 20/20 Preserve (Island Park Preserve south of Fort Myers).  In May, the County Commission endorsed a plan to allow mitigation of public sector projects on Conservation 20/20 parcels.  The plan would allow for accelerated restoration of Conservation 20/20 preserves that quality as well as the injection of new restoration funds for the program from particularly county and Florida DOT seeking mitigation for their public works projects.  It also supports the countywide Master Mitigation Plan, which helps the county meet the mitigation requirements of regional projects; and provides a comprehensive approach to restoring the "Green Infrastructure" of Lee County, which supports the economy and quality of life.

Linear Park - Awarded and authorized staff to enter into a construction manager agreement with Lodge Construction for Phase II of Ten Mile Linear Park.  The project will include construction of a bike path, pedestrian bridges, shelters and landscaping along Ten Mile Canal between Daniels Parkway and Crystal Drive.

Park Rangers - Authorized two additional park ranger positions in the county's Parks & Recreation Department to patrol within Conservation 20/20 Preserves.  The county has 24 preserves and 11,530 acres of Conservation 20/20 lands.

Parking - Approved leasing 100 parking spaces at 2050 Broadway Street (across from FMPD) for employee parking at $35 per space per month ($42,000 a year) to alleviate downtown parking congestion.
