Feb 21, 2005 Lee County Special Olympics Update:
March 24, 2005 at 9:00 am - 2:00 pm Our first Annual Special Olympics Elementary School Field Day at Veterans Community Park, 55 Homestead Rd, Lehigh. Last year 35 students participated in our Pilot project field day event and loved it. this year we have 125 Elementary ESE students training for the event. A number of caring Lee County ESE Teachers have joined Special Olympics to enhance the quality of life for their students.
We are looking for Volunteers who are interested in being scorekeepers, timers, Buddies, and Awards. Our Buddies are also each athlete's personal cheerleader.
Bonita Bay Fishing Tournament
The Fishermen and women of the Bonita Bay Fishing Club is hosting an Abilities Fishing Tournament for our Athlete's and their Families on April 9, 2005. The athlete's spend the morning fishing and receive trophies for their catch of the day. For more information or RSVP call our office at 461-7422.
Lee County Law Enforcement
Make a Date on March 18 or 19, 2005 at Red Lobster on 41. The Lee County Law Enforcement has joined their efforts to serve our special needs community. They will be donating their day off to work as waitstaff at the Red Lobster Restaurant at our annual Cops and Lobster Event. Tips are being collected and will be donated to the Lee County Special Olympics Program. The agencies involved are Lee County Sheriff's Office, Port Authority, Lee County Parks and Recreation Rangers, Fort Myers PD, Cape Coral PD, Sanibel Island PD, Florida Highway Patrol, FDLE, FWC, FBI, CIA, ATF, Florida Gulf Coast Police and many others.
Another event they will be sponsoring is the Annual Lee County Torch Run for Awareness. On April 1, 2005 the Law Enforcement Torch Run begins in Tallahassee and will get to Fort Myers on April 22, 2005. The Lee County Law Enforcement agents will start the Torch Run at the Lee County Sheriff's Office at 8:30 am. and they will run North along 41 to end up at the Pondella Mobil Station in North Fort Myers. From Fort Myers the Torch will then go to Charlotte County for their evening run. The final destination will be the University of South Florida in Tampa on April 29, 2005 to open the Florida Special Olympics State Games. Lee County Special Needs Cheer Competition Team
Congratulations to our Special needs Cheer Squad they have been invited to compete in Georgia. They have already showcased their talents at 4 state competitions. Thank you to the staff at SWFL Competition & Cheer Dance Gym in Fort Myers and Coach Tanya Glatz for making this possible. Int he state of Florida there are only 2 Cheer Teams and we are one. Goooooo LEE COUNTY!!!!!
