Starting this Saturday, Travel the world with International Celebrations @ your library
FORT MYERS, Fla., (Jan. 18, 2005) - Can't get away for a trip around the world? Join the Lee County Library System for the third annual International Celebrations! These free all day events feature entertainment, stories, traditions, and foods from other countries.
International Celebrations are held from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. each Saturday January 22 - February 12. This year's destinations are:
Each International Celebration is full of activities and entertainment for all ages, but each Celebration has a flavor all its own to reflect the history, stories and traditions of the featured culture.
Russia and Ukraine (South County Regional Library) - includes performances by the Gulfshore Ballet and the Kalyna Ukrainian Dancers. Spellbinding storyteller Katie Adams tells traditional tales with Matrioshka dolls. The Three Oaks Middle School Chamber Orchestra performs folk songs. There will also be art projects, chess, Russian storytelling and more.
Japan (Fort Myers - Lee County Public Library) - includes martial arts demonstrations and traditional Japanese plays. There are also Bonsai demonstrations, Tonka (poetry) readings, and a variety of activities for children and teens.
Poland (East County Regional Library) - includes Polish folk song performances and dance demonstrations of the Polka and Waltz. Spellbinding storyteller Katie Adams tells traditional Polish folktales. Traditional crafts include hair wreaths, decorated "eggs", Wycinanki (paper cutting).
Philippines (Cape Coral - Lee County Public Library) - includes traditional dancing and singing presented by the Filipino-American Association of Southwest Florida. A variety of demonstrations include Philippine martial arts, tropical fruits, orchids and more. Teens can compete in the Coconut Olympics or build a Jeepney. There are plenty of games, crafts, storytelling and even a hat parade for children. The East County Regional Library is located at 881 Gunnery Road in Lehigh Acres. The Cape Coral-Lee County Public Library is located at 921 S.W. 39th Terrace in Cape Coral.
