FORT MYERS, Fla. (January 14, 2005) - All Lee County residents will have a chance to dispose of any outdated or non-working electronic devices and household chemical waste on Saturday, January 22nd, 2005 in Cape Coral in the parking lot of the Cape Coral Public Works Annex just South of Everest Pkwy. Signs will be posted. Hours of operation are 8 am to 2 pm.

Household Chemical Waste must be handled in special ways to prevent threats to human health and the environment. This type of waste can not be placed in dumpsters, compactors, or curbside. Citizens need to dispose of these items at one of Lee County's scheduled drop off collection days.

Drain Cleaners, Pesticides, Pool Chemicals, Liquid Paints and Thinners, Fluorescent Tubes, Car and Boat Batteries, Flares and Ammunition, Automotive Fluids, Propane Gas Tanks, Polishes/ Strippers, Electronic Equipment such as Televisions, Monitors, Computers, Printers, FAX machines, Phones, Copiers, VCR and Stereo equipment. Basically anything marked Flammable, Corrosive, Toxic, Poison or Reactive. Do not bring empty paint cans or empty containers they need to be placed with the regular garbage.

We thank the residents of Lee County for their effort in protecting our environment and the loyalty to this program. Even though the summer of 2004 was very tumultuous due to multiple storms and their aftereffects, residents again participated in great numbers at these events. Here are a some totals of material collected at these events in 2004 and subsequently recycled:

9,000 gallons used oil and 500 gallons antifreeze ... over 1,200 propane gas tanks ... 150 lbs. ammunition and flares ... 1.5 tons cardboard (containers brought to the collection only) ... 2,500 monitors and 2,000 CPU's ... 500 + televisions ... 8 tons lead acid batteries ... .. 25,000 lf. of fluorescent light bulbs ... 83,208 pounds of recyclable latex paint .... plus many more items too numerous to mention.

The next household chemical waste collection is scheduled for March 19, 2005 at Page Field in Fort Myers. Again, thanks for your participation and we hope to see you again at one of our upcoming collections.
