FORT MYERS, FL (March 24, 2005) - Lee County Animal Services and the Fort Myers Police Department conducted a special enforcement sweep in the Campbell Acres area of Fort Myers this morning.

The sweep resulted in the following actions:

66 citizen contacts
21 notices
9 warnings issued
22 citations issued
11 dogs impounded, 2 of which were confiscated due to evidence of dog fighting
2 dogs surrendered by owners
1 dog returned to owners in the field
12 dogs at large and unable to capture
These sweeps are part of Animal Services' continuing process of enforcement and are scheduled periodically in various areas of the county. The sweeps involve using the available fleet of vehicles and staff of animal control officers to saturate an area for a couple of hours. While citations and written warnings are issued, many problems are handled as an opportunity to educate owners about responsible pet ownership.

It also administers low-cost spay and neuter programs, educational initiatives, rabies and bite case control programs, and humane euthanasia when appropriate.
