Tropical Storm Fay Update 4:00 p.m.

Aug 19, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: Diane Holm, Public Information Officer, 239-357-3540 or 239-533-3710

Rains from Tropical Storm Fay are causing localized flooding in low lying areas of East Lee County.  Residents living near Hickey Creek and Bedman Creek should watch for rising water and consider evacuating before levels become too dangerous to leave. Emergency vehicles may not be able to access flooded areas.

All residents in low lying areas, near creeks and tributaries should watch for rising water in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Fay. Be prepared to evacuate if water levels become dangerously high. Storm water runoff will contribute to higher than normal water levels that may cause flooding.

Residents and visitors in Lee County are also cautioned to stay out of standing water because of the potential for dangerous levels of bacteria, biting insects and aquatic life. If you can't see the ground beneath the water, it is unsafe to step into it.

Keep children away from storm drains and drainage ditches to prevent accidental entrapment and drowning.

All drivers should exercise caution on wet roads.  Do not drive through water if you can not see the road surface through the water.  Turn around, don't drown.

Avoid driving on private roads, especially those surfaced with dirt or gravel. Careful driving will not only improve your safety, but will help the road surface stay in safer condition.

Lee County Storm Information 2-1-1 Hotline closes today at 5 p.m. At that time the United Way will resume normal 2-1-1 operations assisting the community with non-emergency questions.
