FORT MYERS, Fla. (July 18, 2008) – Mrs. Mimi Drews, Deputy Secretary of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, visited the Lee County Solid Waste Division for an informative tour of the County's Solid Waste facilities located off Buckingham Road in Fort Myers. Highlights of the visit included the 400 ton per day Recycling facility, the recently expanded Waste-to-Energy facility, yard waste and tire processing areas, as well as the transfer station.  The tour was arranged to provide DEP officials current information about State of the Art recycling and solid waste processing operations.

Mrs. Drews was accompanied by representatives from the DEP's South District Office Mr. Ajaya Satyal, District Air Program Administrator Air Resource Management, and Mr. Charles Emery III, Acting District Manager Solid Waste Program.  Managers from Covanta Energy and officials from the Lee County Solid Waste Division hosted the visit.

As the Deputy Secretary for Regulatory Programs and Energy, Mimi Drew oversees DEP's six regulatory district offices and the divisions of Air Resource Management, Waste Management and Water Resource Management. Drew replaces former Deputy Secretary Michael W. Sole, who was appointed by Governor Crist to serve as the agency's leader on December 21, 2006. Prior to her appointment as Deputy Secretary, Drew has served as the Director for DEP's Division of Water Resource Management since 1995.

Drew received both a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in Environmental Engineering Sciences from the University of Florida. She has been working for the agency for almost 30 years.
