FREE SAFETY GEAR FOR KID SAFE SUMMER

FORT MYERS, FL-Giveaways will abound at the 2008 Annual Safe Kids Summer Fun Fair at Rutenberg Park tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., but this year Lee County Division of Public Safety (DPS) is asking children and teens to give too!

The event theme, "Gear Up For Safety" goes right along with the used book drive DPS is conducting to benefit the summer reading program for Michigan International Academy students in grades Kindergarten through grade 8.

"The book drive will give these children books to read throughout the summer, and help them maintain their reading skills," said Diane Holm, DPS Public Information Officer. "Children and teens attending the Summer Fun Fair are going to have the opportunity to take home hundreds of dollars worth of safety gear, and we're hoping they will give up some of their "outgrown" books to benefit less fortunate younger kids."

The safety event will include dozens of professionals from all areas of safety including open water and pool safety, hurricane safety, poison prevention, bicycle and pedestrian safety, ATV safety, motor vehicle safety, gun safety, fire prevention, tobacco cessation, germ avoidance, plus entertainment, just to name a few. Large items in limited supply will be raffled every 30 minutes and include electronic pool alarms, ATV helmets, car seats, safety lights and hats, and more.

"Every child will receive coloring books and crayons and every parent will receive safety information for quick reference to help make it a safe summer," said Liz Moreno, Lee County Safe Kids Coordinator. "We'll have free ice cream and popcorn too!"

"We just want children to be safe this summer, without injury while having fun doing all the things kids love to do," said Moreno.

There is no admission to attend the event and the public is welcome. Rutenberg Park is located on South Pointe Blvd. near Cypress Lakes Drive in Fort Myers.
