EarthDay Blackout for 15 Minutes

Apr 18, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DATE:           Tuesday April 15, 2008

WHAT:        EARTHDAY BLACKOUT FOR 15 MINUTES

WHEN:      Tuesday, April 22, 2008 .  /  8:00pm until 8:15pm

WHY:  The University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Lee County Extension through the Sustainability Program invites the local community to participate in a voluntary 15 minutes BLACKOUT from 8:00pm until 8:15 pm  April 22, 2008 for the Earth Day celebration.

Turning the lights off for 15 minutes is a simple action to show we are standing up in unison to reduce our daily impact on our planet.

We are promoting a regional blackout effort by encouraging a voluntary "flip of the switch" for 15 minutes and invite individuals, communities, business and local government to take collective action against the challenges presented by global climate change.

Downtown Fort Myers businesses, Naples fifth Ave, restaurants and stores in Lee County are invited to join us and be part of this event. Charlotte & Lee County's government buildings as well as Lee County schools through the Environment Education Program are supporting this event and will be part of the 2008 Earth Day Celebration.

Florida's vulnerability to climate change requires urgent attention, and cooperation among everyone is essential in facing this challenge.

The purpose of this voluntary action is to offer 15 minutes of "Respite" to our local environment and hence, our planet.

The idea has been inspired by similar international events such as the recent Earth Hour on March 29th, 2008 – www3.earthhourus.org
