MEDIC APPOINTED TO STATE STANDARDS COMMITTEE

Fort Myers, FL-Southwest Florida will play a vital role in the future direction of Emergency Medical Services as a result of the recent appointment of a Lee County employee to the first state Emergency Medical Review Committee (EMRC).

Capt. Art Garcia, a 24-year Paramedic with Lee County Emergency Medical Services (EMS), was appointed to the committee that is newly charged with developing a reporting system to analyze customer service, medical treatment and ethical issues for the purpose of statewide quality improvement.

"It's an opportunity to be at the forefront of EMS, a leader nationally and to provide the best service to the community," said Garcia, who is Lee EMS' Quality Assurance and Training Officer and an adjunct faculty member at Edison College. "For me it's always been what we can do to stay on the front edge."

In Florida and elsewhere there is a mixture of volunteer responders and paid responders, providing different levels of care during an ambulance call. The committee, which meets for the first time next week in Cocoa Beach, hopes to develop a standard for care that can be met by all Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics in the state.

"It comes as no surprise to Lee County EMS that Capt. Garcia would be appointed to the EMRC," said former Deputy Director Chris Hansen for Lee County EMS. "Like Lee County, the State of Florida recognizes that Art (Capt. Garcia) is a leader in quality improvement processes, and remains focused on continually improving the service and care provided to patients. We are fortunate to have Art representing the views of Lee County and non-fire based systems on the EMRC, and the State of Florida is fortunate to be able to glean from Art's EMS expertise and commitment to quality."
