Sanibel Causeway Improvements Project
Lee County Commissioners to Memorialize Boh Bros. Crane Worker

Kent A. Crappell Memorial Presentation

Fort Myers, FL, (May 6, 2005) - The Lee County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) will honor Kent A. Crappell, the Boh Bros. crane operator who died as a result of a tragic accident while working on the Sanibel Causeway Improvements Project.  The BOCC will adopt a resolution in Mr. Crappell's honor and present a plaque to Rebecca Crappell, Kent's widow, Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at 9:30 a.m., Old Lee County Courthouse, 2120 Main Street, Fort Myers, Commission Chambers, second floor.  The plaque will resemble the bronze plaque that will be placed on the new Sanibel Bridge "A", honoring Mr. Crappell, at the opening ceremony in 2006.  In addition, the Sanibel Captiva Trust Company will present funds to Mrs. Crappell that are being collected in Kent's honor to benefit his family.  Dave Reynolds, a resident on Sanibel Island, initiated the fund and the Sanibel Captiva Chamber of Commerce is assisting with raising funds together with individuals, coworkers and Boh Bros.

Mr. Crappell displayed the presence of mind, quick thinking, and proficiency with the crane to warn his co-workers by blowing the air horn, and steering the falling concrete pile and crane in a way to minimize the danger to nearby motorists and bridge construction workers.  Lee County and its citizens owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Crappell for his heroism.  It is right and fitting that during National Public Works Week, May 15th through 21st, Mr. Crappell is honored and also the tens of thousands of men and women in North America who provide and maintain the infrastructure and services collectively known as public works, in often high risk and potentially life-threatening situations.
