OPERATION "NEW BLUE" LAUNCHED TO HELP THOSE WHO STILL NEED TARPS

FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 25, 2005) - The Lee County Long Term Recovery Committee (LTRC), coordinated by the Department of Human Services, has obtained new blue tarps for the elderly and disabled who still have leaky roofs, or have the original blue tarps on their roofs from the past hurricane season.

The Florida rainy season is fast approaching, the LTRC is aware of the unmet needs in Lee County - whether it is a shortage of labor and materials, insurance issues, or being physically unable to make repairs "Operation New Blue" may be able to assist.

Tarp replacement and labor will be provided at no cost to the low income elderly and disabled. The skilled labor will be provided by the UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief) and local faith based organizations. The tarps (10'x 20') will be made available to the elderly and disabled only, on a first-come-first serve basis.

If you are in need, please contact the Disaster Recovery Coordinator, Patricia Howell, @Lee County Human Services - phone #533-7921.

Lee County Long Term Recovery Committee is also looking for faith based volunteers to assist with debris clean up, tree removal, and home repairs for the low-income citizens of Lee County that are still suffering from last year's hurricanes. There are still over 150 households needing major and minor repairs due to no insurance, an insurance shortfall, or under insured.  Please call and volunteer a little bit of your time to help those less fortunate right here in your own community.
