RIBBON CUTTING WEDNESDAY FOR NEW COUNTY HUMAN SERVICES BUILDING

FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 12, 2005) - The Board of Lee County Commissioners will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday (April 13) for the new main office of Lee County's Department of Human Services.

The ceremony is at 11 a.m. at the new location, 2440 Thompson Street, next to the Lee County Constitutional Complex and across Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard from the main offices of The News-Press.

Commission Chairman Doug St. Cerny will serve as master of ceremonies.  The public is invited to attend.

The Department moved from its Pondella Road location in North Fort Myers.

The 18,700-square-foot building formerly housed the Tax Collector's Office, some Community Development divisions, the County's Purchasing Department, and a U - Save Supermarket.  The property originally housed the B&B Grocery and the City Fish Market.

It has been remodeled in a motif of red brick, columns, and green awnings that mirrors the county's Public Works/Community Development Building and County-City Annex Building, both in downtown Fort Myers.

The County-City Annex recently received a 2004 "Pinnacle" Award from the Lee Building Industry Association for "Best Commercial Project Design."

The new telephone numbers are:

General Information/Client Services - 239/533-7900

Office hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Lee County Human Services provides a complement of integrated services to low-income families and disadvantaged neighborhoods, including emergency financial assistance, housing assistance, counseling services, housing rehabilitation, neighborhood infrastructure improvements and neighborhood building, and services for the homeless.  The department employs 47 people and has a Fiscal Year 2005 budget of $21.6 million.

The Department's Family Self Sufficiency Program is located at the Career and Service Center, 4150 Ford Street Extension, Fort Myers, Florida.
