LEE COUNTY COURTHOUSE CELEBRATES 90TH
ANNIVERSARY

The Lee County Courthouse will celebrate its 90th  anniversary during December 2005.  The Courthouse has been the physical and symbolic center of county government since 1915 and is the headquarters and offices of the Lee County Board of County Commissioners.   It is located on approximately 1.75 acres of land ( AKA Courthouse Square ) at 2120 Main Street  in downtown Ft Myers.   The current facility is actually the second County Courthouse in Lee County history.  Lee County was established by Florida Legislature in 1887 and until 1894 there was no permanent Courthouse.  Commissioners rented a room for their meetings.  In December 1894 the first Lee County Courthouse opened it doors on Courthouse Square and served as Lee County government headquarters until it was demolished in 1914.

To celebrate the current Courthouse's anniversary, the tour schedule of the building has been expanded during December.   Anyone interested in arranging a one hour tour should call Booch DeMarchi, 335-2481.  Additionally, self guided tour fliers are available in the County Courthouse reception desk.  A 70 page history book about the history of the Lee County Courthouse, written in 1995, is available for $ 5.00.  Copies may be purchased in the Lee County Public Resources Office ( 335  2111 ) in the Lee County Administration Building at 2115 Second Street in downtown Ft Myers.

In mid December Lee TV, Lee County's 24-hour government access TV station, will air a new episode of "Inside Lee County" with the history of the Old Lee County Courthouse as the main topic.

Inside Lee County airs on Monday nights at 8:00 PM.  Lee TV can be seen on cable channels: 11 Comcast and 16 Time Warner and is also streamed live on the web.  Visit the County's website at
