Southwest Florida's Sanibel and Captiva islands score high on revered Best in the World' list

LEE COUNTY, FL ( November 1, 2005) For the second year, Sanibel and Captiva islands have been acknowledged as among "destinations approaching perfection" in Cond Nast Traveler magazine's 2005 Readers' Choice Awards, earning spots on the Top-10 North America Islands list.  The highly-regarded travel magazine, with a circulation of 777,000, surveyed its discerning readers for the November 2005 issue, asking them to rate their favorite island destinations for ambience, friendliness, lodging, restaurants, and shopping.    Sanibel Island ranked fourth, while Captiva Island came in at No. 6.

These are higher standings than the islands achieved in last year's survey.
Sanibel and Captiva's scores put them above those of Outer Banks, N.C.; Mount Desert Island, ME; Amelia Island, FL; and Mackinac, MI.
According to Cond Nast Traveler, "Paradise began as a garden, but if you ask travelers to name a paradise today, you can bet it'll be an island  probably a tropical island . . ."

In the 18-year history of the awards, Editor in Chief Klara Glowczewska states, "We celebrate the achievements of the travel industry worldwide, and they are remarkable.  This year's scores are the highest ever."
