LEE HUMAN SERVICES RECEIVES GRANT FOR HOMELESS SERVICES

FORT MYERS, Fla. (September 22, 2005) - Lee County Human Services has received $100,000 as part of $2.1 million of grants for homeless services announced this week by the State of Florida's Department of Children and Families.

The money will be split equally between Southwest Florida Addiction Services, the Salvation Army, and Human Services' LIFT (Living Independently for Today) Program.

The funds will support services to 1,082 local people including emergency food, clothing, and meal programs; medications and medical services to the homeless; and emergency aid to help families stay housed.

Twenty-two organizations serving 41 counties throughout the state participated in the $2.1 million of grants.

This funding augments homeless assistance funding in the amount of $2,320,922 awarded to Lee County Human Services in January of this year by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Lee County Human Services provides a complement of integrated services to low-income families and disadvantaged neighborhoods, including emergency financial assistance, housing assistance, counseling services, housing rehabilitation, neighborhood infrastructure improvements and neighborhood building, and services for the homeless.  The department employs 47 people and has a fiscal year 2005 budget of $21.6 million.
